Environmentally sustainable designs start with location and orientation. In the southern hemisphere, we have the advantage of using passive building design to let in winter sun and cut out summer heat load via overhanging eaves. This advantage is mainly afforded to north facing orientation taking advantage of a low winter sun trajectory and a high summer sun angle with some secondary benefits to East and West facing orientation.
